There's nothing like fall

Fall in Kentucky this past year did not disappoint! Now although my love for Arizona runs deep, I did miss fall colors and leaves blowing around in the air when I lived there. So to be in a state that has an actual "fall" was quite a treat for this photographer and autumn lover. Luckily (even though my clientele is much more sparse here than it was in Arizona) I was able to have clients book during this beautiful time of year. I found a location that- well, I just couldn't use just once. I went there four times actually- but only because this location had SO much variety in such a small area. You wouldn't hardly know I used the same location if you compare sessions (which I'll post the others soon!). Some of the engagements I shot in the summer were taken here too. Two of my four shoots I did here I was able to take pictures of photographers and their families. It's always such a compliment when photographers ask me to take their pictures! I know I have big expectations to fill, and they always are so grateful and happy with the turn out. Hooray! This is Stephanie, a fellow photographer. Both she and her family were such a joy to work with. I even lost an earring during shooting and they looked around with me to find it! In the leaves! Haha. That was so nice, even though I told them not to worry about it. Turns out it was by my car all the time (ditz). Stephanie warned me beforehand of her children's energy but I'm always up for that! I have two very fast kids myself (another on the way, too!) and neither seem to care for my camera very much so I always think, "well it can't be anything I haven't seen before!" The kiddos did take lots of coaxing, as most do, but I think we captured them being them- which is what we really want, right?!

Hmmm... so I've been doing "professional titles" for too long and I'm over it. (; I'm going to be more "me" with this blog now. SO there are going to be BIG changes for this blog. I'm changing my design/logo quite a bit. Hopefully it'll be the last time! Also, in case you haven't seen- I made a big announcement about Connie B Photography on my facebook page. Go check it out.

My littlest brother Perris got married, that I just blogged, and so did my younger brother Mike! Mike and I are Irish twins. We shared a lot growing up and I loved it. I'm so happy he's happily married now. Even though shooting a double wedding- - by myself- - was crazy, it was a happy day.

Haha! I love the look in my brother's eyes... GIMME OUTTA HERE! lol!

Perris & Elyse | San Diego Temple Wedding

Here are some pictures from my baby brother's wedding day last summer. Playing catch up still... probably forever. Ha! I have to say it was the craziest day of my photography career. I had lots of families to coral, which wasn't a problem normally, but I had a DOUBLE wedding to capture. My other baby brother happened to get married at the same TIME. Same place, thankfully. It was nuts. I think I'll be sticking to one wedding per day from now on (for my sanity) but as far as pictures went, we had a good turn out. *Phew. Only sad thing (minus nearly losing my mind) was the overcast and gloom this August day (but that's typical for the beach area in the morning, I know). I just was hoping for some pretty blue skies! One big moment is when they come out and the family greets the newlyweds. Then the next big event is the reception, which I wasn't able to go to. Darn it! I'm so happy for them! Love you guys!

Kailee & Hunter | Louisville Maternity Photographer

This is a friend of mine Kailee, who I enlisted to do this shoot for me back in August. Aren't they just the cutest? They came wearing the most beautiful bright colors too (something I love). This idea actually came from a dream I had (sounds cliche, but it's true!) In hind sight I wish I would've written down some of my ideas because when I got there my mind went blank! That could be because I didn't do this till months after the original idea. But alas, I liked it!

The idea: Hunter, the older sister is really excited for her little sister to arrive. She's SO excited, in fact, she decides to build a little "stork landing pad" so her sister is free to come as soon as possible. :p "If you build it, they will come" right? he he. After waiting a while, she decided to show mom what she did and maybe mom can convince Mr. Stork to come early, too.

An Anniversary | Louisville, Ky Photographer

I'm making it a goal to post the shoots I've done this year. With the move, I didn't do as many as last year. I've really been okay with that because I HAVE been busy with it... but it's been nice to focus more on my family. I took these back in August for my parents 29th wedding anniversary. It wasn't a planned shoot- they were actually passing through town and I asked if they wanted some pictures. There is this darling flower shop down the street so we did it there real quick before we went to lunch and I wished them off, as they drove home to Virginia. I love my parents. I've taken their anniversary pictures the last three years (you'll find them here on the blog). The first year (when I didn't even know how to use a DSLR) was shot in Virginia, the next was in Big Bear, California, and this one in Kentucky. I love getting to spend so much time with my parents even though we are always in so many different places. I can't wait to catch up and share the rest of what I've been up to this year... it was 22 degrees on my way to church this morning so this hot humid day was nice to reflect on again. Didn't think I'd ever miss that. (:

When I'm at a shoot, I fiddle with my settings until they are just right and the stragiht out of camera image needs as little work as possible. While I'm doing that, I'm taking some images to see what I like best. This usually takes 30 seconds in the beginning of the shoot. Even though some settings don't work for what I'm going for, I can still improve the image thanks to my good friend Photoshop. I love that even my test images can be offered to clients thanks to PS. What would I do without it!?

I'm so proud of my parents for making it 29 years even with all the ups and downs life has brought them. They are a wonderful example to me in my life and my own marriage! They were driving through on their way back to DC where they live and we had to squeeze some quick anniversary shots in before they left. I'll share more soon! Happy 29 years today, Mom and Dad! These might look a little like the last couple shoots I just posted with Mike & Arely. That's because it was a combined shoot for both my brothers who got engaged around the same time! I flew out to California, Perris & Eylse drove from Utah, and we had a mini family reunion as well as engagement session for all. It was a tiring trip (since my plane got delayed and I slept in the airport with my 6 month old all night)... but we had fun! I just got back from a trip to California where both Mike & Perris had their weddings! It was a double wedding, how cute is that?! I thought it was neat especially since my mom and dad had a double wedding with my mom's brother way back when (: Keeping up tradition, right!? They are married now but here are their engagements...

For our second location we went to the beach. When I think of my brother Mike one of the first things that comes to mind is the beach. We are beach bums, it's true... but especially Mike. I'm glad we got to go somewhere that holds a special place in his heart. I'm so happy for both of them and I can't wait to see them on their big day in less than two weeks!

I was so fortunate to get to take engagements for my baby brother. I love this guy so much, he is one of the greatest guys I've ever known. He's selfless and giving.. as a matter of fact, he flew me in so I could take their pictures. I got to visit my home state, California, which is always a plus... but I could've been any where and still been so happy to get to spend some time with my bro. We are irish twins too, by the way. Although my little guy tried so hard to not smile for these, I do have to give him a little credit... we only tried these for about 15 minutes. Plus, he was so interested in the kids around him he wasn't listening/looking at me very much. haha! But I still think he's too adorable and I'd be remiss if I didn't share. These were forever ago. In a few weeks, on the 17th, he'll be 9 months! (on my birthday;) I took these when I did because he was about to be a crawler at the time and I wanted to take pictures while he'd still sit in one place. Even though he's distracted, I still love these.

In 2005 when I was at college I started taking clips of people and I'd put them together to music and we'd all get together and watch them as friends and reminisce about the great semester we just had. Then I moved on, got married and did that for my husband and I with the little pictures and video clips we got on our tiny 8mega pixel point and shoot. Those little movies mean so much to me now, despite how amateur they look. (;

Then I bought my wonderful camera years later... learned how to use it... and became a photographer! I LOVE what I get to do. As much fun as that is, I was feeling like I wanted to do a little more. When I did my brother's engagement pictures months ago I decided to make them a video, too. It was a last minute decision while we were there and most of it I would've done over, if I could. After it was all done though, I was so happy with it. And I knew I could do even better the next time! So here is my 2nd go round at making an engagement film. I keep learning so much every time! After all these years of practice here and there I think I'm finally going somewhere with this and I'm now offering it to clients! Not only can you capture those darling smiles and moments in picture but you can also look back and watch them happen again and again.

In the version I made for them I also had an interview with them talking about how they met, got engaged and all that. It's cute. I just didn't want to have to upload such a big file (;

Here's another quick update. Remember how I was working on self portraits? It's tough. Especially when your tripod and remote break. But I replaced the tripod and got new batteries and we're in business again. I have so many ideas swirling in my head for shoots- I'll try to make those happen before it gets too hot!

If you want to know where my passion for photography most likely came from you're looking at her. Meet, my mom. She was commonly known around our house as the paparazzi. Growing up she ALWAYS had a camera in hand. Sometimes two or three on her where ever we went. That and video cameras. At a young age I learned to appreciate the beauty of photography as a hobby. I'm pretty sure if it weren't for her I wouldn't be as into photography as I am.
She's not a "photographer" by profession but there's no denying my mom's love for pictures. Thanks for showing me of your ways mom- you've gotten me all obsessed. (:

She came to visit me when I first moved here. I thought it would be fun to take some quick shots in this dead area right by where I live. Don't you think the brush looks so dreamy from the bokeh!!?! I love it. It was before spring sprung that we took these but as you can see the leaves were starting to come out again. The area we went to looks NOTHING like this anymore (it's suuuper green now). I love that about Louisville! Every week things have been changing since I've been here- so much variety! I intended on sharing this around mother's day but life happened and yah... better late than never!

This shoot came about because I had an idea and a few more days left in Arizona to make it happen. So I posted on facebook that I had one more opening and Diana snatched it up! I was so glad, aren't they cute!? I got pretty lucky with the lights- I had literally JUST enough cord to plug them in. If the outlet had been 2 inches further I wouldn't have been able to do it! If it wasn't a mini session and we were there closer to dark I think that would've turned out cool too but I was happy with these!

Self Portrait love | Louisville, Kentucky

So I have two photo shoots set up for this week. *STOKED* I'd tell you what for but why ruin a perfect surprise? (; All you need to know is it requires a plane ticket and possible swim suit. Since I've been in Kentucky I haven't really had much time for photo shoots so I haven't done a lot of advertising and stuff. I'm starting to find time for it again so if you live in or around Louisville, Kentucky I'm your girl. But in the meantime I've taken up a love for self portraits. Mostly because I see a great location that I know won't look like that forever (like these flowers) so I take it upon myself to seize those beautiful spots while they last.

You wouldn't know it but there's a whole new level of difficulty that goes along with self portraits. I have to make sure to get myself just right, in focus, and so that my vision is met. It's pretty hard to do when you're not looking through the lens to angle and crop it perfectly. Sometimes I'm very disappointed .. I mean how creative can tripod shots be? But sometimes I find good ones. I'm going to perfect it, you wait and see(; (And soon I'll share more of these and all the other shoots I still have to share)

Shooting newborns is one of my favorite things. But my new baby boy would have none of it. I think he thought I was bugging him so he could eat- he was not easy to pose.
At any rate, I still love shooting newborns but MAN my kids are the hardest for me to photograph. Ironic, yes. My three year old will sit through one or two clicks before saying, "Okay! That's enough pictures!" Haha. Oh gosh.
At any rate, this was one of many "shoots" we did. So we can call this part one- but really it was just a random day, he looked cute as always, and so out came the camera! Come to think of it, EVERYDAY is a photo shoot at my house! (;

Compared to Mesa, Louisville has some serious schizophrenic weather. I've seen hail, wind, sun, humidity, warmth, cold, SNOW, rain, tornado warnings... all in the last month I've been here. It's not like that in AZ. You can count on the sun being out 95% of the time. I love and miss that part about it. We've had rain for the past few days here in Louisville.... tonight I'm missing the sun!
However, it is GORGEOUS in Kentucky- I miss the sun today- but you can't beat this scenery... just wait till I show ya! Here's a shoot I did literally days before I moved out of AZ...

By now you all know my friend Natalie. She's one of the most beautiful people I know- on the outside but also INSIDE. I love her! Anyway I did something a little out of the ordinary for me- and took these pictures mid-day. Most of these shoots on the blog were taken later in the day for softer lighting but we decided to take on the harsh noon-day sun. The sun is usually my nemesis but I'm working on embracing it. The fun (but also challenging thing) about photography is that each day is different from the next in terms of lighting. In a studio you can control your lighting to be the same each day but outdoors is a gamble. Some days are more ideal than others- same goes with time of day. However, since I can't control the changes outside, I'm learning to work with them all. I think I'm doing pretty alright (;

So I post this for two reasons... ONE, how darling is my little boy? I don't take many pictures of him like this- usually they are just candids. (That's all I get from him most of the time anyway- seeing is he is 2 and all)
But the biggest reason is because I wanted to introduce a new "feature" (if you will) about my photography...
I'm back to editing with a "vintage" look! BUT not entirely. I love (and sometimes prefer) fresh color and black & whites so that is what each package includes. HOWEVER, I do enjoy sprucing up pictures even more so I thought to bring them back again- for those who want them! So if you have already had pictures taken from me, you are welcome to come back for some vintage edits, too. Just see THIS for details!

This also goes for new or potential clients... you now have the option of vintage edits. I'm excited to bring this back!

Meet my pretty friend Natalie- you might recognize her, I've had the privilege of shooting her a time or two (: I'm in a photography class this semester that's usually fun- this assignment was fun anyway. The image I shot for the book cover is now completed for her book! You can see it here- I think she did a good job adding her effects to it (remember I just took the picture, she added all the fun book cover stuff). It'll be interesting to read the book to know the significance of the cover.

Also, a couple weeks ago I was asked by the sweet girls at Whippy Cake to take some pictures for a service project- document the day. It was fun to be able to be a part of it and help! You can see them here.

While on our camping trip, sick, 26 weeks prego, and tired- I got a few shots for my parents 28th wedding anniversary! I owed it to them.. after all, they gave me life- and pretty much every opportunity in the world to do and achieve what I wanted. I had a full camera card and it started to sprinkle so we didn't get much but I like these. My tough army dad (who recently got promoted to Lt. Colonel!) was a hard man to make smile but I fooled him once or twice (: I love you mom and dad! And mom- you're hot. I can only dream to look as good as you in 22.5 years.

This was probably the worst day to take pictures Arizona has had all year. It was ironic too because we rescheduled once because of rain... it didn't.. and the day we moved it to, it did. We were lucky though, it never more than sprinkled on us but it was soooooooo so dark, windy and freezing!! Maybe I'm a pansy.. or just used to Arizona heat and sun.

But I was super happy to shoot this family! In fact, I was just telling my husband days before I got her email that I really wanted to have a photo shoot at this place. So when she said they might want to go there I was all for it! My vision was way different- the weather pretty much to thank for that. But I still love these. I really want to have another shoot here in the future!

Oh, and btw, this family chose to do two locations (which means more fun for me!)

Since I proclaimed this business, my heart was set on taking pictures at a Carnival. I LOVE love love carnivals. We did a test run with my family see them {here}. The inspiration came from preparing my future baby's nursery back in '08. He was just about to be born when I looked out his window and saw a traveling carnival at the mall across the freeway. Every year around this time (his birthday time) it's BACK! So I called the mall, found out exactly when it was going to be there and enlisted my gorgeous hairdresser Aryn to come play. We had lots of fun- got to shoot in all different types of lighting and I decided my new camera is the bomb dot blogspot dot com. That's right, blogspot. Because we all know it's better than just a plain ol' .com. Do enjoy!

The theme was bohemian, something new.. and I rounded up some friends who were kind enough to let me let my creative juices flow..phew, major run-on sentence. I love doing shoots with zero pressure, if you know what I mean. The only thing that worked against me was the noon-day sun. Not the best time to have a photo shoot but these girls are such beauties, it ended up not even mattering.
There is a duplicate photo in here...fyi...eh.

My friend pointed out to me this cute little shop and it was just what Christine and Jordan were up for! I was glad because I thought it was a fun location. This portion we did a little more trashing... little bit (; Christine was covered in glitter by the end of the night... we ended up using the whole bottle, lol. It was super dark by then but got some cool ones- thanks Jordan for helping with the glitter part! I loved their idea with the guitar ones, too. This was lots of fun!

Ok, so we technically didn't trash her dress. But you probably recognize the term.... it usually means they're already married but they want to do another fun photo shoot with her wedding dress. I myself have been needing to do this, even talked to my photographer friend and everything.. but, I never got it taken in. Now that I'm prego, looks like it'll be postponed another year. Geesh.

Anyway this was a lot of fun but I'm not going to lie, also scared me to death! Until, I made it safely on land...It was my first shoot with my new camera and I thought for sure it was going to end up at the bottom of the lake. Not to mention, that row boat was no piece of cake to maneuver. I tried. I failed.
Do not underestimate the complexity of a row boat...
